We are very pleased to have worked with historic independent bottler Gordon and MacPhail to release this Royal Mile Whiskies exclusive single cask; a Mortlach 17 year old, bottled at natural strength from a sherry puncheon. This is a rich and refined dram, with notes of butterscotch, orange oil, rancio and festive spices.

Gordon and MacPhail are renowned for their curation of quality casks, forged through expertise and relationships built up over their 130 years of operation.

Here is a little more about the bottling from our Spirits Buyer, Sam: 'After sampling this cask with colleagues, I am delighted with the quality and think it impressively carries the sherry cask and distillery character well. It's not a bruiser of a Mortlach but still chunky and delicious.

For most of the 20th Century, G&M were effectively official bottlers for many iconic distilleries, acquiring licenses to use brand names as the market for single malt Scotch whiskies evolved. This was due to their longstanding relationships with producers which helped them purchase new fill casks for their own wood maturation policy. The Distillery Label editions of Mortlach are iconic. Gordon and MacPhail have shown they have excellent casks of Mortlach with sherry cask maturation at their heart, and this single cask, cask strength 17 year old maintains this high level of quality.'

Staff Tasting Notes

Nose – Indulgently old fashioned, vanilla fudge melds seamlessly with the tangy rancio of quality oloroso. Water brings out plain chocolate and dried apricot.

Palate – Butterscotch, dark honey, cinnamon & nutmeg with warming, lively orange oil. Water imparts an unctuous texture and brings out notes of camphor and curacao orange.

Finish – Lingering spice and candied peel.
