Dr Hostetter's Bitter is a storied liqueur, allegedly rationed to Union Soldiers during the American Civil War as 'a positive protective against the fatal maladies of the Southern swamps, and the poisonous tendency of the impure rivers and bayous.'
In more modern times it is an aromatic bitter containing gentian root, cinchona bark, rose and candied fruit.
