From Old Forester's premium Whiskey Row range, the 1870 Original Batch is inspired by the character of the first whiskies produced after the brand was founded in 1870. In those days, founder George Garvin Brown produced whiskey by blending whiskey from different local distilleries. The 1870 Original Batch emulates this by blending from their own whiskies of different ages and fill strengths from three different warehouses.
The classic Old Forester mash consists of 72% corn, 18% rye and 10% malted barley and is fermented by their proprietary yeast strain with ca. 20% sour mash. The fermented mash is distilled to 70% abv. in a 13+ meter tall copper column still before diluting slightly to fill into new American white oak barrels at 62.5% abv. The barrels are stored in temperature controlled warehouses for the maturation period.
